What is Frottage Painting?

If you’ve never heard of frottage, it’s basically the faux paint technique where you press film or fabric (any thin material) into a glaze then peel it off. The word frottage comes from the French and means “rub”. Frottage produces a richly varied texture that’s very different from what you can achieve with a brush or roller.

You can virtually use any material to create the texture. An inexpensive material to use is plastic food wraps, newspaper or dry-cleaner bags. But if you’re looking to use fabric, there are inexpensive dropcloths you can use. Plus, get creative with fabrics like burlap or lace for a highly textured contrast.

The absolute easiest solution is of course to hire a professional painter, however we know sometimes finances are tight but you still want your house or apartment to look nice and feel like home. So here are 3 tips you can use to make that home painting job go a little but easier.

1. Always buy extra supplies and save every receipt. You never want to be caught in a situation when you have plenty of help but not enough tools. Save your receipts to take back the extra after your paint job is done.

2. Enlist the help of a friend. Don’t try to tackle a bigger job by yourself. That will make the work go alot quicker and maybe even enjoyable.

3. Open windows and ventilate the room. When purchasing your paint, ask for low or no VOC paints. These paints will emit fewer fumes when you paint. Make sure you open windows and doors for fresh air while you are working and after until the painting fumes have dissipated.

In case you didn’t know, August is National Home Business Month. What better way to celebrate this than refreshing the paint in your own home office. Take a moment to think about your favorite colors. It may be the color that inspires you the most, or your favorite bright color that will keep you alert, perhaps you have a color that just makes you feel good. Those are the colors you want to consider for your home office wall.

Now make sure you choose the right color for you, just because grey and beige walls look professional doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for your home office, keyword being “home”. The paint color needs to reflect you, your home and be beneficial to your work habits. If white walls bore you to death, then that’s not the color you want. Maybe green gives you great inspiration; you know it is proven to increase productivity. Some people prefer a golden paint color because it represents success and divine power.

Whatever color you choose, just make sure it is something you can live with for awhile; you don’t want to paint every time your mood changes so think of the color as mood influencing.

Happy Painting!
